well, I think I'm having a similar problem.

I'm using WinMe and since last Friday (around the time of
the mystery credit card stealing virus - not necessarily
related but ...?), I also can't start up IE6.

It immediately gives the "needs to close .. sorry for the
inconvenience" box with send/don't send error report.
With the 'restart IE' box checked, this would go on
forever, and I never even get a browser window opened.
Anti-virus & spyware don't find anything, btw. And I
searched for kk32.dll and surf.dat too. No estan.

If chevygirl doesn't have another browser installed I'd
say she's screwed. How can you d/l what you need to
reinstall IE without a working browser? I suppose it's
back to the original system recovery disks first.

Never mind uninstalling all the myriad patches and security
updates....

I just installed Mozilla and it works better than IE for
browsing, but of course doesn't work with Windows update.

at this point I have no motivation to fix IE - I'm just
abandoning it altogether. We'll see when the next major
security problem comes up...
