Re: Windows Messenger auto starts with Outlook Express 6

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

I found a fix that works on my machine. No more Messenger opening
every time Outlook Express starts. It requires a simply registry
edit. Remember, I have Win98SE. Use Regedit, and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Add a New, DWORD value called Hide Messenger and set the value to 2.
(This step is required to prevent a long delay when opening OE with
the
Contacts pane enabled)

Good luck! I was reluctant to simply dump messenger. I have a
situation that may require it in a month or so.

This worked great for me!

Windows Messenger's intrusive design and the different and onerous
procedures to suppress it from running automatically when:

1. Windows starts
2. Outlook starts
3. Outlook Express starts
4. MSN Explorer starts
5. ...and who knows what else is bundled to launch this useless
memory
gobbler

makes it too tedious a program to keep around. I disabled it in the
registry, as suggested in Brian's post.

Thanks, Brian.

BTW, I created a folder in my start menu and named it Messenger. In
it, I
created two registry files:

1: "Disable Messenger.reg"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client]
"PreventRun"=dword:00000001

2: "Enable Messenger.reg"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client]
"PreventRun"=dword:00000000

If, I ever decide that I want to run Messenger, from the Start Menu, I
click
on Messneger and it opens a folder with three files:

1. Disable Messenger
2. Enable Messenger
3. Messenger

With a few mouse clicks I can then enable Messenger and run it and
disable
it when I'm finished with it.

Do either of these help?
