Re: Windows Messenger auto starts with Outlook Express 6

If we could answer that question, we'd probably both doing something
else, and not with any concerns about what it would cost us.

I vaguely remember that Messenger asked a bunch of questions during
the install. One example is how I wanted to "appear" when it logged
on. I have not found a way to change that after the fact, only for the
moment. So, there may be other such options that cannot be altered
from the installed program as well?

I think there were some questions about how it should act with mail. I
am not sure... But I would uninstall and reinstall, and be very
careful about how I allowed it to make icons, install in the tray, run
in the background, and such..... Maybe do that for both Messenger and
OE, which of course means IE as well, doesn't it? Oh my!

Finally there was some data collection option I fully declined every
time it reared its ugly head. Maybe one of those things is keeping it
locked to Outlook.

I do know that it starts every time I use Internet Explorer to visit
MSN, and I can't shut it down when I am on MSN. I have to leave MSN or
shut IE down first. It does shut itself down if I leave MSN even if I
keep IE running.

It is a very intrusive program, and the bad part is I simply haven't
made any use of it since I allowed it to install.

I don't know if it will help, but you do know that exiting in
Messenger still leaves it active in the tray, and actually running?
You have to right click the tray icon and use Exit to actually shut it
down.

Last, look in the Start, Programs, Startup list, and see if it is
there. If so, drag it to the desktop or better yet the Recycle Bin. I
have a desktop icon I use to start it when I want it, which has been
rather a long time ago, it seems.

I hope some of this helps you. I do understand and share your
frustration with the increasing tendency for many programs to want to
assume control of your system, to "make things better!" Better for
who, is the question?

One of the best side effects of my Zone Alarm firewall is that it
blocks all those silly, and often outdated programs that run just fine
on my machine and suit me very well, from accessing the Internet every
time they want to go to some automatic update site that has long since
gone away.

I wish there was a piece of software I could install that would simply
let me decide when, if, or never to allow any program to do anything.
But if there was, it would probably want to visit a half dozen sites
every few minutes, demand to see my financial statement, and send out
tons of spam every five minutes as the hidden cost of having such a
wonderful tool. Sigh......

Good luck! Let me know how it turns out.

OH, I almost forgot. In my installation, that Messenger start activity
only happens with I view Outlook Today. Every time, first, last, and
in between, it starts Messenger in the tray, and then shuts it back
down. Crazy. Maybe if you checked that box on Outlook Today that asks
it to start up in the in box...... I don't know.

Nope. That doesn't work either. I've unchecked every box in the
Personal and
Prefernces tabs in Messenger. Mrssenger still runs every time I launch
Outlook Express. To add insult to injury, it won't close as long as
OE6 is
still running. Why does Microsoft insist on making it so difficult to
use a
simple program like OE?

In Messenger:

Tools
Options
Alerts & Sounds
Uncheck "Display alerts when email is received"

Good luck. The two remain connected by an umbilical cord of some
kind.
When Outlook starts, it will start Messenger, and then close it.
Watch
the system tray for that activity. I'd love to be able to stop it,
as
it only slows Outlook down. But those two boxes, this and the last
at
least kept it from opening altogether.

I tried that before I posted this question. It doesn't stop Outlook
Express
from launching Windows Messenger.

How do I stop the annoying Windows Messenger from starting every
time
I
launch Outlook Express?
