FTP Folder error

when im using Internet Explorer 6 as a FTP im unable to download files from the server my website is on, but I am able to upload fine? When trying to copy a file to a folder on my pc I get the following:
FTP Folder error, An error occured copying the selected items from the FTP Server
Details
200 type set to I
200 PORT command succesfull
213 10618
500 RETR not understood
When trying to download through a FTP program such as Flash FXP I only get the last part of the error.
Can anyone help me, I need to download some files. I know its not a server problem as othe rusers can download files fine. If its of any use MY ISP is aol who say they have no experience for this error and that its not there problem and I should contact my pc vendor. Also my OS is Windows ME.
