Hi Liz, hmmm very strange about the number 33 on your destktop. I think your
system has been compromised. Dont' freak out there may still be hope yet.
What anti virus software do you have? I would strongly reccommend you go to
http://www.avast.com and download and install the free trial. Then do a full
thourugh virus scan. That will catch any viruses and and then you have the
option to lock them away in a quarantine chest. Although some viruses are so
nasty you may want to have it professional fixed which means you will have to
shell out money. There is also the possibility you have spyware and or
malware. Go to htttp://www.spywareterminator.com and when you download your
computer save it to the desktop. Then click the icon install it and run it.
Run a full scan. Do you have kids? Now the reason I ask is kids are
notorious for going to shady sites that can cause this kind of infection and
they can hide their tracks. So if you do you may want to consider monitering
their web use and talking to them. Anybody else got any ideas?

I had IE8 but I uninstalled it and reinstalled IE7 thinking that the problem.
was the software version. After reinstall, I tried what you said, but no
luck, when I right-click on IE there is no response at all. Also there is
something that I noticed on my desktop at the time of this trouble. Most of
the icons on my desktop suddenly have a little blue box with a number (I
think 33) inside, on them. I've never seen or heard of anything like this
before, and I don't know what caused then to suddenly appear like that,
whatever it is, it probably has something to do with the trouble I'm having
with my computer. Have you ever heard of anything like this?
Thanks.

oh interesting there is no icon on your desktop because when IE installs it
automatically puts one there. So let us do some things. first let us verify
you have IE. go to start, contol panel, add/remove prgrams. A list will
generate of all the programs on your computer. see if you have IE and what
version. Scroll down the whole list and look. Next go to start and you
should see IE listed there. right click it select send to and create desktop
shortcut. Now you know you have IE and you have a shortcut icon. now click
the shortcu ticon to open. if that fails right click it and click run, open
or open home page. Let me know if this resolves things

Hi Kayla,
Thank you for your quick reply and offer of help. I'm new to these
newsgroups and I think I might have accidentally sent a blank reply, if so, I
apologize, I'm just learning this.
Anyway, I installed IE8 a few weeks ago, before I installed the new memory
last week, it worked fine, as did the IE7 and also after I installed the two
memory modules (1 GB each) which greatly improved the speed and performence.
But a couple of days ago my internet explorer would not open when tried to
open it from the start menu. There is no error messege,it just won't start.
I tried system restore, but that tool opened halfway (just the blue frame of
the window) the window itself is just a white screen.
Also, I don't have the IE8 icon on my desktop that i could right-click to
"open". I haven't tried the "run" command yet, i think I'll try that
tomorrow.
Thanks :)

Hi Liz I want to help you. I do not think that adding more memory will
interfere with IE actually it should make your computer run faster. Now i
have some questions to I would like you to answer and then I will see what I
can do.
1. When you had IE 7 did it work?
2. After you upgraded to IE8 did it work it all and when did it stop working?
3. When you click the internet explorer icon on your desktop exactly what
happens, do you get an error message? Does the icon change color after you
click on it? and does an hourglass appear?
4. Is your computer experienceing any strange unexplained behavihior such
as a dramatic slowdown pop ups etc.
5. Have you tried right clicking on the IE icon on your desktop and
clicking on open, open home page, or run?
Please answer these questions get back to me and I will see if I can help
you resolve the issue.

I recently installed more memory (2GB) on my PC (win pro 32bits) and now I
can't get IE8 to start! Is it possible that my Dell Dimension 2400 can't
handle that much memory? I bought it in 2003, and it used to have 348MB
memory installed which wasn't enough (hence the reason i installed more
memory).
thanks in advance
