Have you uninstalled all AOL software? (If they're using AOL Bring Your Own Access or whatever it's called, you can reinstall it afterwards if need be.)

PA Bear,
Thanks for your help... I went over last night and spent about 2 hours still
can not clear the proxy box and have it stick. I disabled real time
protections of ad-aware and then deleted it completely, removed zone alarm
and still nothing. Firefox hits the internet quickly with no issues still
can not get explorer to do so. They bought the pc as a compac bundle so
everything was included. is there anyway I can blow away explorer then
reload it? Or are there any suggestions you might offer? I am bout to back
up there files and run the restore disk and start from scratch. I do not
really want to take this route as I will probably miss important photos, or
documents ..Sorry to be a pain as they say no good deed goes unpunished!

You needn't delete or uninstall the applications. Furthermore, doing so
without having first disabled the "real-time protections" may not work.
Help Please wrote:Hey Thanks a ton for your help. Spybot, and Ad-aware were loaded on their
pc. I added free zonealarm just to get a firewall up for the cable
install.
I will delete all of the above and see after a reboot if the setting
take...
anything else you suggest?
thanks so much for your time!

One or more options/settings in an ever-growing number of third-party
applications may be disallowing the change(s) from "sticking". These
include but are not limited to Ad-aware Pro Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer,
SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, CounterSpy, AVG Anti-Spyware,
Norton AntiVirus, McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware, NOD32, and Zone
Alarm (Free, Pro, & Security Suite).

Help Please wrote:Hello,
I am helping my parents switch over to comcast high speed. They have
ALWAYS
used aol with a dial up connection. The cabe guy came and pulled the
cable
and said he had them online but told me there was a problem with the
proxy
settings. I told him I would go get it figured out. The network
connections seem to be fine but when I open Internet explorer it wont
hit
the internet. In Internet options/connections/lan settings the box for
use
proxy server for your lan is checked the ip address is the loopback
address. I clear the boxes, uncheck the box and check the Automatically
detect box at top. If I immediately click on explorer I can hit the
internet but the setting immediately reverts back to the box being
checked
for use proxy sever for your lan.?? The thing that is wierd is that I
then
was able to download firefox and that works fine with no issues? I
really
would rather use explorer as I like the interface better and I think if
they are learning they will like it much better. I have tried
everything.
I was one test away from my MCSE Cert before I took another career path
so
I might not be brilliant but I do have a pretty firm grasp on networking
and microsoft products. I really just cant get this figured out and
would
really appreciate any help you might be able to offer. There computer
is
using XP home edition. It is a compaq presario about 3-4 years old. I
have recently added the service packs. THANK YOU for any help you might
offer!
