Ok, this reply is about 6 weeks late, but better than never.
Some weeks ago I'd asked about a problem in which my IE
"Links" bar shortcuts were screwed up, with the (should-be-
hidden) ".url" extensions showing. After a couple days,
I saw no reply here, so in desparation I googled some more
and found some suggestions, which I tried. They seemed to
have no effect, but after the next time I restarted my
system, the problem WENT AWAY. So I have no idea of what
fixed it. Oh, well.
But I see now that 3 days after my post, some kind folks did
reply to my message. Thanks to all who replied.

(Note that I took a look at the "always show extension"
checkbox on the file-type settings screen for url files,
and the checkbox is NOT checked. So that's not the problem.)
Use that Check box. That creates a value named
AlwaysShowExt. Rename that value to NeverShowExt.
Hmmm. Not sure if that was what I did that fixed it or not.
Don't remember now. But I'll keep that setting in mind in
case the problem recurs in the future. Thanks for the tip.
