Re: sun java runtime won't work in IE6

Well darn...forget that last reply. Applets did work fine in IE6 until I
rebooted and checked the windows updates which wanted me to install
KB816093. It would never finish installing this update I think because
msjava.dll was installed, but the rest of MS JVM was not. Anyway, I ended up
unregistering the dll and deleting it from the windows system32 folder and
of course once again the applets would not work in IE6. After trying a
number of other things, I finally have the problem fixed.

I went to 'Control Panel' > 'Java(TM) Control Panel' > 'Advanced' tab >
'Default Java for browsers' section and I unchecked 'Microsoft Internet
Explorer', applied the change and closed the Java Control Panel. Then I
deleted the TIF and opened IE6 and went here: http://www.anfyteam.com
As expected, the applet wasn't working. Next, I closed IE6, deleted the TIF
and went back to the Java Control Panel and checked 'Microsoft Internet
Explorer' applied the change, etc. Then when I opened IE6 again and went
back to the anfy webpage, the applet worked fine and in fact now all applets
work fine in IE6 with Sun JRE only installed.

Problem now fixed and Sun JRE works fine with IE6. Just installing Sun JRE
may not work to display applets in IE6 if MS JVM has never been installed.
Apparently the Sun java runtime in IE6 is dependent on msjava.dll. This is
not the case with IE7 or Firefox. With IE6, you don't have to install MS JVM
but do need the msjava.dll file. The dll file can be downloaded from here:
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msjava
....and unzipped into the windows system32 folder and then registered with:
regsvr32 msjava.dll
....and applets will work in IE6 with Sun Java runtime only installed.

Support for MS JVM ended Dec 31, 2007:
http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/default.mspx
....and it should not be installed. I'm not happy about the IE6/msjava.dll
dependency but at least applets in IE6 are working now.

Since posting my question a week and a half ago, Sun Java runtime still
does not work in IE6. As a test I installed IE7 and applets work fine in
IE7. I uninstalled IE7 and am back to IE6 and applets do not work again.
I need to be able to use IE6 for testing in XP and need for applets to work
in IE6 like they did for years before I had to recently reinstall XP on a
new replacement hard drive. I have IE7 installed in Vista so I don't really
need IE7 in XP. If anyone can offer any suggestion as to how I can get
applets to work in IE6, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Richard

Recently my hard drive started going bad and I replaced it with a new one
and did a clean reinstall of XP SP2. I installed Sun Java runtime to be able
to view applets as I have done in the past. This time it won't work and was
working fine before the reinstall of the OS. The installation goes fine
through Sun Java and it even verifies that it is installed but when I open a
webpage with an applet, I only see a red X where the applet should be.
I do not get any error message.

As a test, I uninstalled NIS2007 and that didn't help, and anyway Sun JRE
(and everything else) worked fine with NIS2007 on the old hard drive. I also
tried an older version of Sun JRE (ver 5 update 6) and that didn't help
either. Sun JRE version 6 update 3 or 4 (the latest) won't work either. I've
uninstalled (add/remove programs) and reinstalled several times and it still
doesn't work.

In IE6, I went to 'Tools' > 'Internet Options' > 'General' tab > 'Settings'
'View Objects'. Attached is a screenshot. Note that there are 3 objects
for Java and 2 of the 3 have a yellow shield with a black exclamation point
as icons. I know someone with XP Pro and IE7 whose objects look the same
and their Java works fine to display applets in IE7 so it may not be
significant. Also, the 3 objects are enabled in the IE6 Add-ons in 'Tools' >
'Manage Add-ons'.

I can go to this site for example: http://www.anfyteam.com in FireFox and
the applet displays fine but the same applet will not work in IE6. In IE6,
where the applet should be I see this text: "IMPORTANT! If you have Windows
XP, download Java from: Here!!!" (the 'Here' is a link to:
http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html). In most other pages I get the red X
where the applet should be with IE6 but they all display fine in FireFox.

If anyone can help fix this Sun Java runtime problem in IE6, I would greatly
appreciate it.

Thanks,
Richard
