No matter what I do, checking the registry entries, using hijackthis,
Spysweeper, antivirus checks, I can not find where verizon.msn takes over
plain msn.

May we assume that Verizon is your internet service provider, and that you
used the installation CD which Verizon sent to you ??

My internet explorer is one that came with windows, and not the updated or
changed by verzion.

If the above is true, your IE is now owned by Verizon's modifications.

Just by typing in www.verizon.msn.com on my computer to try and figure out
why my email / screen name would not down load Spysweeper or McAfee
antivirus. Since I have a dial up account with msn these are free.

Not to mention that you shouldn't take or install either of these,
who is your Internet Service Provider that gives you access to MSN ?

But Verizon.msn blocks it. And, now this computer, when I type in
www.msn.com goes to verizon.msn.com

Who is your ISP ?

Where is that address change located at??? so I can fix it. Also for some
reason explorer will not let me post a new thread on this site, but reply it
will allow. To be able to post here I am using firefox..

Firefox... another mistake, IMHO.

I can easily fix the problem by re-loading my partition with my saved Acronis
backup of July. The problem with that is it will take a few hours to update
that partition once it loaded, since itâ??s about 24 updates or so behind.

Get them all at once as you go to sleep, keeping your fingers crossed
that your connection is not terminated. Even if it is, the latest version of
Windows Update should allow you to resume from the point of disconnect.

Yes I Know some of you would say just down load them all at once, but that
causes problems, MS has not fixed yet.

The latest version of Windows Update is barely a year old, and this is
no longer an issue. I regularly download for clients who are re-loading
the XP OS, updates to the tune of 76 to 80 at once. There are no issues
here. Those that must be downloaded seperately will state such.

I learned that lesson 3 years ago,

An antiquity in relation to advancements in the interim.

And, That generally requires a reboot.

Ther are very few updates that do NOT require a reboot... but a single
re-boot is good for all.

So I would prefer the fix if possible.

At this point, with no more information than provided, removing the
software you received from Verizon is my best guess. All you need
is a phone number and a password... you don't need the software.
