Well, I have just uninstalled and reinstalled from the Microsoft site and
the result is the same. I now realize that the showing of the current
website in front of "windows internet explorer" at the top left of an IE7
window is part of IE7 or, at least, part of its default. Since I was
testing with my default website, it always said Google there. But, if I
visit msn site, it says msn.com in front. I guess if it said Google.com
rather than just Google, I might have figured out it was not branding. So,
this is attributable to Microsoft, I guess, though most would probably argue
that it's not a bad feature really, and I might now agree.
Also, some of the other things I didn't like about IE7, such as the icons
for favorite places and add favorite places on the left side of the bar
below the menu bar appear to be irremovable, though I could be wrong -KINDLY
LET ME KNOW HOW TO SUPPRESS THOSE, IF THERE IS A WAY. Also, the box where
it shows the current tab's website's logo is apparently part of the new
multi-tab based design and probably cannot be removed.
So, in summary, it appears that I did not need to reinstall. At least, I
now have a better idea of what is part of the IE7 design and what are
customizations. I'm slightly surprised that none of you realized my
stupidity on this! As far as I can tell, we're all stuck with some of these
new features though, with some acclimation, I am starting to realize that
most are really improvements! For example, I like having the words showing
on the menu bar, but the cartoonish icons are probably just as easy to use,
if I don't show the menu bar. If I do show it, then I simply have some
redundant functionality.

Both Yahoo (http://downloads.yahoo.com/internetexplorer/index.php) and
Google (http://www.google.com/toolbar/ie7/) are offering customized (much
more than "branded') versions of IE7. If you have Yahoo or Google
Toolbars installed, these customized versions may have been offered to you
via the toolbar's autoupdater.
If you'd prefer the non-customized, default build of IE7, uninstall what
you have now then install IE7 using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx as the installation
source.

Actually, I now realize that, when I open up a window, it reads "Google
Windows Internet Explorer" at the top left. Within add/remove programs,
it seems to be listed simply as "windows internet explorer 7" and has a
link to Microsoft which, if you follow it, says nothing about Google.
It seems as if Google, which is my default home page, has branded itself
onto IE 7 when I installed it. Someone asked me if I installed it based
on some message from Google but, to the best of my recollection, I did
it
using the windows update, though maybe not. I usually am very careful
not
to be seduced by upgrade notices from anywhere except windows update.
In any event, you folks almost seem to be suggesting that I don't really
want IE7 - that IE6 is fine. Or am I misreading you? I assume there is
a
way to reinstall IE7, if that is advisable, while sidestepping this
branding.

Play it safe. First use IE's File | Import and Export to export your
favorites to a file.
Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs
Removing Windows Internet Explorer 7 returns you to IE6.
