ActiveX Control?

Hi,
I have written a HTML/Javascript program that runs on the local PC in
internet explorer. What I want to do is to hook up this program to an
external serial device. How can I do this?.

My guess would be to write an ActiveX control using C++ and embed that
although I don't know whether that is practicable. Has anybody got any
comments on whether this would/could work and any pointers to resources or
similar projects?.
