Open Google links in separate window

I have IE6. I upgraded to IE7, hated it, and immediately removed it
and went back to IE6.

I have my Google preferences set to open links in a new window. Before
the upgrade, it worked fine. Now, I click a link in the results window
and if I don't already have a second window open, it works fine. Then
once I click another link in the original window, instead of loading
the page in the second window that is already open, it does nothing.
If I close the second window and then click a link, it will open a new
window again. If a right click on a link and open in a new window, it
will open a third window.

Is there anyway I can make it work right? Is this related to the
updade and subsequent downgrade?
