My operating system is Microsoft Millennium Edition and my browser is
Internet Explorer 6.1. I constantly receive the error message that IEXPLORE
caused an invalid page fault in KERNEL32.DLL @0177:bff614ac and when I click
OK in the diaglog box, Internet Explorer closes. I tried using the Repair
Option in Add/Remove programs and downloading Internet Explorer 6.1 and
replacing the existing version with it. However, these choices produced no
change. Should I try downloading IE 6.1 to the desktop, uninstalling the
existing IE 6.1 and then reinstalling IE 6.1 from the newly downloaded
desktop version? Any other suggestions? Yhank you. Paul.
<Something> caused an invalid page fault in kernel32.dll at 0xnn:bffnnnnn where x is 0, 1, 2 or 3 and n is any hex number (0-1 and A-F).
Check for the availability of updated drivers for your video board. If you want to try some tests:
Turn off any animated cursors
Try a different color depth
Turn down graphics hardware acceleration a notch or two (Control Panel | System | Performance | Graphics)
If you have an ATI video board, try adding these lines to System.ini
[display]
DevBMP=0 <--- That's a zero
If any of these work you definitely need new video drivers.
Also check for multiple copies of Winsock.dll and/or wsock32.dll. Winsock.dll should be in c:\Windows and wsock32.dll should be in C:\Windows\System. Extraneous copies can cause problems. (wsock32n.dll does not count as a duplicate copy)
The existence of Advert.dll in C:\Windows\System can also cause this. Rename it if it's there.
Another thing that sometimes works is to clear your TIF file in IE | Tools | Internet Options.
Remove the Genius Netscroll utility from the Startup group. If the problem persists, uninstall the Mousemate 98 software by using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, and download the latest driver from the Genius Web site: http://www.genius-kye.com/
McAfee Virus Scan 5.x is also reported to cause an IPF in kernel32 when IE 5.5 is being used. Try disabling download scan and live update (or whatever they call that) and see if the invalid page faults disappear. While this is most reported on Win2K, I have also seen reports on Win98.
