Version 3 did update automatically to version 4 for me, but it was quite a
while after version 4 came out. I don't care for version 4 at all, and
even worse, the update apparently trashed my IE settings, including the
toolbars and add-ons. I uninstalled version 4, deleted everything I could
find that had Google in its name, including registry entries, put IE back
the way I had it, and reinstalled version 3. I also set my firewall to
forbid the Google Toolbar Installer access to the Internet. It's been 20
days since I did that and the update has not recurred, but I supect that
it may yet show up again. If so, I'll abandon it entirely. Software that
updates itself without my explicit permission is malware by definition.

Why do you say it (version 3) automatically updates to Version 4 when
it wants to when it doesn't for me? (and never has)

Googling came up with this site:

However, keep in mind that whatever version you install, it's still going to
automatically update to version 4 when it wants to.

I just realised that I uninstalled the toolbar completely now, but, I would
like to keep the older version. Do you know where I can obtain the
previous verion 3?
I dont really like the it automatic update factility Google has. It's a
shame it doesnt have an option for update.
Thanks again.

It appears from other posts that you cannot stop version 4 from
updating.
FWIW, I have version 3 and see no pressing reason to go to version 4.
Mine has never asked me to update.

How do I stop Google from automatically installing the new version of the
toolbar?
