Re: Cannot change Home Page.

Options in several third-party applications disallow such changes. These
include Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer, SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper,
Norton AntiVirus, McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware, and Zone Alarm (Free
and Pro).

NB: Simply disabling the responsible application won't help. You need to
identify and disable the "homepage protection" while the app is running,
otherwise no changes to the Registry will be made.

I had to do a full reinstall of my system (XP SP2 Home on a Gateway). Now
I
can't change my Home Page. I tried everything:
1. Ran virus/trojan/spyware checks (it doesn't appear to be the product of
a
trojan as it remains on gateway.com)
2. Disabled/removed all anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall programs as
well as toolbars.
3. Disabled everything but the most crucial startup items
4. Relaxed security for Active X components
5. Removed and reinstalled IE Windows component (after System File Check)

Then, I tried a registry change, but to no avail; specifically, I delted
the
HomePage value in the following key --
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control
Panel I then downloaded StartPage Guard. I tried to change the home page
with that and I got the following error - RegSetValueEX failed with: 5.

I noticed that for the following Registry keys that either or both of
Default_Page_URL value and the Start Page value are set to www.gateway.com
or www.gatewaybiz.com:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

HKEY_ LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

HKEY_USERS\Default\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

Could that be the reason?
