Sometimes when I click the IE6 icon nothing seems to happen,
but when I then check Task Manager I find iexplore.exe "active"
with around 11MB mem usage (always the exact same amount).

I can make another try and start IE6, it will show up in task
manager as a second instance of iexplore.exe, sometimes working
sometimes hanging in the same way as the first - and so on.

This behaviour began after some update, I no longer remember
precisely which because I did not immediately notice anything
irregular.

Any suggestions anybody?

Are you running any third party toolbars like Yahoo or Google?
Try turning them off.
