1. This is not a moderated newsgroup.
2. Google Groups archive shows no other recent posts containing the phrase "unrecognizable characters" (http://groups.google.com/groups/search?q=%22unrecognizable+characters%22&start=0&scoring=d) and no recent posts by you (http://groups.google.com/groups/search?q=tech1+OR+author%3Amark%40texanit.com&start=0&scoring=d).
3. The behavior you describe has been recognized to have been caused by Google Toolbar for quite some time, especially in IE7 Beta.

For some reason the topic of unrecognizable characters in IE 6 was
magically closed by the moderator? The posts did not fix my problem and
people still have issues.
Symptoms:
Internet Explorer 6 plain font types are missing and/or substituted
with a WP Boxed Drawing Font.
I was getting strange characters showing up on a couple of my Windows
Server 2003 machines and I read through many help forums and through
Microsoft fixes and patches for font problems but all of the fixes
required a reinstall of the windows fonts. This task is a pain in the
ass because it requires backing up my old fonts, deleting the key
containing the fonts in the windows system registry, rebooting my
computer, then reinstalling the fonts from the Windows CD.
Seconds before I began to reinstall the fonts ... I decided to check
for any programs in my startup files or that were running as system
processes that could have been the cause of this font substitution.
As soon as I killed the Google Toolbar process that was running in
memory I magically got my plain font types back (Latin based).
The Google Toolbar runs as a system process long after closing Internet
Explorer.
Quick Solution:
Uninstall Google Toolbar
Is Google experimenting with creating new fonts to replace
Microsoft's Internet Explorers Fonts?
I know that the fonts Microsoft created are one of the underlying
reasons they are successful ... but please don't experiment on your
customers.
It seems like Google has installed SpyWare on my operating system that
substituted fonts on my machine.
Has Ad-Aware been bought off by Google? Could this be the reason for
the Google toolbar distribution in Ad-Aware's software? Makes sense.
Google User Suggestion:
Google needs a patch area on their website to fix toolbar.
Call it something like Google Toolbar Patch 1.0.
