IE6 Freezes

Hello:
Thx for the opportunity to ask a question.
I have been using IE6 for about 4 years now with little problems. I
usually have more than one window open at a time and, when a web site
freezes or IE freezes---I was able to---through the task manager---end
the IE window causing the problem. The window would close---but---all
other open windows would remain open and any files I was downloading
would continue.
Recently, IE has been freezing more frequently---sometimes in multiple
windows. Now---when I attempt to clear a window through task
manager----all windows close and all files that were downloading cease
and clear.
Does anyone have a clue as to what may be causing this?
I might add that Netscape 8 does not give me the same problems whether
I have multiple windows and/or tabs open. Same with firefox. I have
tested both.
So---it must be IE. Is there a way to repair it or will a reinstall it
over itself possibly clear the problem (if so---how do I accomplish
generally)---or ----am I out of luck here! I really like using IE even
though it has security problems.
Also----I have NOT recently downloaded any patches (maybe I should
be)----I weekly run my virus and 3 spyware programs and I appear to be
clean. I have XP SP2. The only software I may have added since this
started is the Microsoft beta software----windows defender.
Thx for any help!
