So, unfortunately, the patch didn't work. As a matter of fact, if you go to the MS Knowledge Base article that goes with the patch you linked to, Windows 98 (either Standard or Second Edition) isn't listed under products the article applies to--even though it said Windows 98 was supported on the download page...that's probably why it didn't work.
Oh well. Thanks for your efforts anyways!
