When I type and address in the URL field and hit enter, nothing
happens except the hour glass and then it eventually times out. I
have to go to task manager to stop the task. Also when I click on
the dropdown arrow on the URL field to view the last pages I've
visited, the hour glass comes on and sit there and times out. This
all started a few days ago. What can cause this?

Read the entire article. There are (user friendly) solutions which don't
involve editing the registry.
