Re: Can access secure web pages but not normal ones,

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi Mike :-)

When you say that you had to "rebuild" your PC, what did you do to rebuild
it? Did you do a full hard drive reformat and then install XP from scratch,
or did you do a repair of the system? There is a difference, especially, if
there is some form of hidden malware on the system that can cause this kind
of problem. With a repair the malware will not be removed, just the system
files will be repaird. With a full reformat or wiping the hard drive, every
thing on the hard drive is removed, even the malware. If the malware was
not fully removed, then it can still cause this problem, and will until it
is fully removed. Also, some types of malware can replicate itself
repeatedly, even though it is thought to be removed, and even mutate to a
new strain, if it is not fully removed from the system.

So.. which did you do, and we will try to work from there :-)

Hi,
I am running XP Home SP2 with all the latest Windows updates.
I can access secure (ie HTTPS URLs) and local HTML files but not
unsecure web pages (ie HTTP URLs).
This is the second time this problem has happened without anything
having been done on the PC just prior to it appearing. The first time
it was fixed when I had to rebuild my PC and reinstall everything again
from scratch. Now it has gone down again withing a few days. The problem
was present immediately after turning the PC on the next day after
everything was working fine the night before when the PC was shutdown.
I would be grateful if anyone out there can suggest possible
explanations and hopefully a fix.
Regards
Mike
