Are you running XP?
If so, are all Windows Updates installed?
If so, are you able to boot to Safe Mode With Networking and connect to the Internet?
If so, does Internet Explorer produce the same error and behavior?

I got it changed but now an error box keeps coming up saying "windows can not
find '(null)' make sure you typed the name correctly, then try again, etc".
Except I am not trying to find anything, I am clicking on links and or
favorites

Google search on that error brought up (among others):

IE wont revert back to being default firefox keep opening links and
bookmarks, browser checks are both uncheck and checked and unchecked IE to
check for default but wont default to IE
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Leave IE set to check that it is the default browser -
Uninstall Firefox from Add or Remove Programs -
Restart the computer
Open IE and make sure all aspects of it are working properly
Reinstall the newest version of Firefox from:
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
When Firefox opens, always choose NO to it being the Default Browser
