Re: IE 6 sp2 - encoding problem

Thanks Jan for your input. I appreciate your help. I was thinking that some
how, some where....I'd done something. I am really computer literate but this
did have me baffled and I didn't know where "I'd" gone wrong. I'll just hope
somehow, this all will fix itself and work the way it used to.

Hi Cathlene :-)

As a test just went to the link you provided and it is changing the
Encoding setting Unicode (UTF-8) that I normally use to the Western (ISO) as
well. After going to another webpage and resetting my Encoding back to
Unicode (UTF-8), closing IE, opening it to my homepage, my Encoding settings
is unchanged. I click on your link and encoding is immediately changed to
the Western (ISO) and will not allow me to change it back to my own setting.

Thus, unless this is happening with all the websites that you are visiting,
it does not appear to be a problem on your end, but, may be the settings on
that webpage. At least, that is how it is working for me here.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jan

Thanks for the response. I did everything you mentioned and it still is
doing the same thing. I have Windows XP Pro. Some of the sites I am having
problems with is http://www.weather.com/weather/local/85346 - when I go to
that site, it comes up in a really strange format. When I check the
encoding
(View-Encoding), I have it set to Auto Select and it will be on Western
European (ISO) and I manually put it on Western European (Windows) and it
will then come up in the right format. Ebay is another site that it won't
auto detect on. I can do a search but when I try to click on any of the
links, it just hangs....I go up and manually select Western European
(Windows) and it will go in. I tried turning off the Auto Select and just
choosing the Western European (Windows) but I still have the same
problem -
it keeps going to the ISO.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, but, try the
following (for XP) and see if it helps.

Go to Tools>Internet Options>General tab>Accessibilities
Check to be sure there is nothing checked here. For normal viewing,
nothing
should be checked.

If no joy....try resetting the Toolbars back to default and see if that
resolves the problem:

Reset Internet Explorer's Toolbar Menu

or.....

Restore Default Toolbars

Recently I have problems loading web pages and have determined that the
encoding isn't automatically detecting. I can manually switch it with
View -
Encoding - and choose the correct one so that the page will view but
would
like for it to be automatic again. Checking the auto detect doesn't
make a
difference. Would you happen to know of anyplace on windows that I may
have
inadvertently reset something so that the encoding isn't automatic? Any
help
is greatly appreciated.
