IE 6 SP1 Crashes on Some not All Websites

Am running IE 6.0.2800.1106IC on Win98 Second Edition. Was off internet for
about 12 months with this PC. Added a Linksys 2.4 GHz Wireless G PCI
Adadptor and re-established I-net contact successfully on 2 February 2006.
Went to download latest critical and optional updates to this PC from Windows
Updates site. Was required to download an IE6.0 SP1 upgrade. Under IE >
Help > About this left me with a “Custom” IE installed at 6.0.2800.1106IC
including Update Versions: SP1; Q905915; Q837009; Q891781; q313829. After
this I found that for NOT ALL but QUITE A FEW websites IE now crashes after
reporting the pop-up error: “Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.” When I
click for error report details there is always a reference to Appl Name:
iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName: msvcrt.dll ModVer:
6.1.8293 Offset: 00015ca2. Looked through MS KBs. Ended up on MVP
Sandi’s Site. Worked my way down through recommendations to this one: “Web
site content is not updated or you receive an unrecoverable error in Internet
Explorer and launched link there to support.microsoft.com/?kbid=812989. I
was indeed having theproblem described there:
“Internet Explorer unexpectedly quits or you receive the following error
message:
Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience.” From here I launched “Resolution” link to 834707.
There I was referred to 873377 as an even more comprehensive remedy for my
problem than 834707 for Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1) hotfixes that were
released after Microsoft security bulletin MS04-004 (832894). Assuming
Windows Update already downloaded these MS04-004 updates, I proceeded to
download and install the 873377 updates. My problem persisted. Some
websites crashed IE while others still opened okay. It dawned on me to check
if my IE updates mentioned the number Q832894 associated with MS04-004. They
did not, so I downloaded and installed them, still had the problem,
redownloaded and reinstalled 873377 again (wondering if order of things
mattered). Bottom line – I still have the problem. I rebooted between all
of these downloads/installs. Prior to any of this I tried flushing IE
cookies and files the normal way through IE > Tools > Internet Options to no
avail. I did not yet try the ipconfig/flushdns DOS command recommended on
Sandi’s Site. Should I?

After downloading and installing IE Updates MS04-004 and 873377 my “Custom”
IE 6.0.2800.1106IC Application now includes Update Versions: SP1; Q905915;
Q837009; Q891781; q313829; Q873377; Q885258. (I’m not sure why Q832894
doesn’t show up against my MS04-004 download instead of Q885258.)

Based on my consistent and continuing IE crash errors for some websites
might there be something wrong with my msvcrt.dll file? I have several
copies of this dll file on my PC as follows: one in
C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\PWS, one in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM, one in
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\TempFolder.aaa, one in C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\pft2042~TMP\Reader,
one in a C:\Program Files\3Com folder, four in C:\Program
Files\Hewlett-Packard folders, one in a C:\Program Files\Disney folder, and
one in C:\SharedOffPC folder. I compared the code across the first two of
these with each other and with a code copy I downloaded from
www.dll-downloads.com. All three had different values for several fields.
The msvcrt.dll file in C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\PWS was the largest with the
broadest scope of fields. I saw the MS KB Article 129605 on How To Extract
Original Compressed Windows Files using sfc for Win98 SE, but, suspecting
that the one in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM is probably the one used by Internet
Explorer, I was reticent to try replacing it via sfc by this method because I
was not sure how to recreate it there from what might prove to be the more
generic one on my original Win98 Sec Ed CD – not to mention that this CD one
might no longer be appropriate in lieu of my subsequent windows updates over
the years since the CD was created. Does anyone have any suggestions for me
besides abandoning my Win98 SE PC? I have a good many programs on it over
the years that continue to serve me well, so abandonment is not an easy
option. Should I download IE 6.0 and IE SP1 then uninstall any IE updates
and IE 6.0 SP1, and then reinstall it from the downloads?
