Assuming Windows XP...
No guarantees, but go to Control Panel> Add or Remove Programs> Add/Remove
Windows Components. Uncheck Internet Explorer. Restart. Repeat, but check
Internet Explorer this time. Restart.

If unsuccessful with that, post back to this thread.

Due to a problem with a trojan that glued itself to IE6 I deleted the exe
in
safe mode. Now I find the "intelligent" installers all stop me replacing
it
as my registry still shows version 6 is there.

I tried the regedit solution I found and totally screwed up my machine so
had to go back to last known state.

Any other thoughts on what I can do to override the install programs? I
don't really feel like having to rebuild my machine!
