You don't mention which version of Windows you have, but, try the following
and see if it helps:
How to Make Internet Explorer the Default Web Browser (Q284456)

In XP log on to the Admin account
Go to >Start>click on "Set Program Access and Defaults"
If you don't see a list there to select from, click on the double down
arrows at the right end of the line which will open the list.
