Common reasons for delayed launching of Internet Explorer 6?

I run a Windows XP PC and use Internet Explorer 6 browser with all the
latest service packs, automatic high priority updates etc. I also run
McAfee antivirus software and Webroot Spy Sweeper. My ISP is Wanadoo
Broadband in the UK.
In recent weeks, I have experienced a significant delay between clicking on
the IE icon and the browser actually appearing on the screen. This occurs
even if I have an ongoing broadband conection, say from downloading pop3
email. My startup page is www.google.co.uk .
I do not recall making any significant changes to my software setup recently
but was wondering, is there anything obvious to look at that may account for
the apparent changes in the behaviour of IE6?
I frankle don't enjoy sitting there twiddling my thumbs for 20 seconds
wihout even an hourglass type icon teling me IE is actually launching. I
have even been impatiently clicking on IE icon several times, leading to
multiple open Google windows, after a considerable delay.
Any ideas why that near-instantaneous feel of using IE6 with broadband
connection may have gone on my PC?
