There may be no program associated with the .txt file type. Go to My Computer, Tools...Folder Options...File types. Scroll down to the .txt file type, make sure it says "Opens with" Notepad. If not, click the Change button. Check the other file type settings between the working and non-working systems.

two systems WinXP pro SP2 with IE6 SP2
when clicking on .txt-file both indicate some activity but result is nil: no prompt, no download
when clicking on .ppt, .zip one prompts for download, the other behaves like for .txt
what's wrong?
