Well to cut a long story short I have found latest is not always the best
for NVIDIA drivers, but people will also tell you that the drivers offered
by Microsoft Windows Update have been somehow "Altered" from the original
NVIDIA ones. In my experience this is absolutely not true, I have always
been offered NVIDIA updates that are identical to those on the NVIDIA
website, the big difference is that the installation method may not be
appropriate using Windows update. You want to install just the drivers, all
by themselves, with all other software stopped or else do it in safe mode.
That is not necessarily the case with Windows update and I think that's
where the mythical Microsoft interference problem originates.
The other thing to consider is that something like Norton is so invasive it
may alter things in one way, then when uninstalled put them back another
way, and then along comes an update and the files changed by Norton are
replaced with good ones which actually breaks the chain. Whilst I didn't
know about Norton at the time of my reply that is one reason I asked about
other updates. It seems to me that when an official update appears to break
something it's actually because it was already "Broken" but limping along.
There has recently been a spate of similar connectivity issues with IE
following updates, although once again it's not for sure than any one update
is responsible. You might try opening a command window and using "netsh
winsock reset" without the quotes to see if that restores anything. Some
people report that IE doesn't work while FireFox does and others report that
no browsing works.
