I don't have a useful answer for you; I just wanted to let you know that
you're not the only one who sees symptoms like this. It's not the
retention period that causes the problem. Mine is set to 31 and I still
occasionally find that viewed links suddenly are no longer colored
differently from unviewed links. So far as I can tell, the history
information is intact -- it's just the special coloration that's lost.
