IE6 + WinXP + JRE 1.5.0_05: applets won't load

I just set up a new PC with XP sp2, all the latest updates from
windowsupdate.microsoft.com, and the latest JRE.
When I go to a web page with applets on it, the applets don't load, and
when I try to leave the page, the browser freezes, presumably because
the JVM hangs trying to download the applet.
Web Start doesn't work either; double-clicking on a JNLP that I
downloaded manually yields "checking for latest version" indefinitely.

I'm behind a SOCKS v4 proxy; IE (and Mozilla) have no problems with the
proxy. I told Java to use the browser settings. (I also tried setting
Java's settings manually, but that made no difference.)
I also tried reconfiguring the gateway to use Win2k connection sharing
instead of the SOCKS proxy; the result was the same as above: once the
network interface, DNS, and proxy settings are appropriately changed on
the XP box, IE and Mozilla are happy, but Java still can't seem to load
anything.

I tried downgrading to JRE 1.4.2_09; result: applets now load in IE,
but not in Mozilla, and of course Web Start is hopeless in this
configuration because it won't play ball with SOCKS proxies.

(BTW, applets work fine when loaded from the local filesystem, so this
really seems like it has to be some network connectivity issue.)
I have no clue what could be wrong; a different PC with Win2K works
fine in the same environment. Maybe some XP security feature is
blocking my connections? I tried turning of the XP firewall but that
made no difference (and what really gets me is why can the browsers
load HTML pages without problem, while Java can't load applets with the
same settings?).

Strange...
