I have a customer with an older Compaq 98SE machine. He can connect
to the ISP and seems to be accessing the internet, but can not
display any web site. A text page comes up with a discussion about
"the site being restricted by Safepage.com" for every web address I
tried. The computer did download an update on his AVG antivirus
while I was there, so that link worked in the background. I ran a
virus scan which came back clean. Tried to update Spybot only to get
the error message that the update failed (after a 15 minute download
wait). I could not get to Lavasoft to get Ad-Aware. I will be going back on Monday with updated Ad-Aware and Spybot on a
CD to run these again. But I can't find anything on "Safepage.com"
as a malware or spyware. I could not find any thing in the
Add/Remove list that looked out of place, nor in the "msconfig"
listings.
The customer can get his "Encredimail" just fine and he is happy with
that for the moment. I did notice that he had over a 100 addresses
in the Security - restricted site list. He claims he did not put
any of these in, but they looked like sites I would have banded. His
Hosts file is the standard default file.
Anyone with any suggestions, help would be appreciated.
First eliminate any spyware. What You Should Know About Spyware http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/devioussoftware.mspx
CAUTION!!!!! Removing some spyware can damage the Winsock stack and you may not be able to connect to the Internet. Before you try to remove spyware, download a copy of LSP-Fix - a free program to repair damaged Winsock 2 stacks AFTER you remove the software (all Windows versions)
