Filling in for Frank who's traveling right now:
When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post your log to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/, http://castlecops.com/forum67.html or http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

Thanks for all your help Frank. I downloaded adaware, and the TrendMicro spyware hunter and used both, found a number of things and then dumped everything. What next?

It may have already been uninstalled." When I checked the system information in Control Panel is says Win XP Pro Service Pack 2 is installed. Where should I go from here?

Microsoft Update will not allow me to try to download sp2 again to reinstall. When I bypass MS Update and find a downloadable sp2 it is for developers and is useless for me. Frustration level is VERY high - seems like EVERY option is closed to me. IS there anyone at Microsoft who has any idea how to fix this or is it some kind of deliberate "attack" by Microsoft. I have been on Microsoft communities for a week now and no one has been able to help. I just want to getr rid of IE/OE so I can re-install it. This should be simple and if it's not then someone at MS needs to invest some of those trillions of dollars profit into fixing this. I'm forced by MS to have IE whether its working or not!!! Thos is ridiculous.
Does anyone know if Apple OS can be installed on a PC - it's enough to make me want to go back to Macs.

Having rediculous problems with IE/OE in XP Pro SP2. I need to dump both and reinstall but downloading stops when it determines that I am using the same version it is trying to install. This should be easy to do but I assume this problem is because IE is imbedded in XP. Is there anything I can do here or should I just move to Linux?
How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378 Make sure your anti-virus is turned off. The section Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and install Internet Explorer 6 works on earlier versions of Windows. If you added WinXP SP2 you will have to uninstall that first.

I don't know what has happened to make Windows thing SP2 might have been uninstalled and therefor no idea how to fix that. Perhaps the first step is to attack the problems.
First eliminate any spyware. What You Should Know About Spyware http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/devioussoftware.mspx
CAUTION!!!!! Removing some spyware can damage the Winsock stact. Before
you try to remove spyware using any of these programs , download a copy of
LSP-Fix - a free program to repair damaged Winsock 2 stacks (all Windows
versions) so that the program will be available after removing the spyware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:
