mht file not found problem

I tryed to browse here for an answer, but no luck. So anyway here's my problem:
I too have lots of *.mht files since they are so much cleaner than regular
web page saves. Anywho when I try to open any of them(stored on my hdd) this
message appears:
Windows cannot find c:\folder\name.mht) Make sure you typed the name
correctly, and try again. To search for a file, click start button than
search.
I just want to point out that i navigate to the file using win explorer and
i double click the file. I can open them, however, if i use ms word or
firefox(both of witch suck at doing(first for being unstable and flickery,
and second for taking a small ice age to open)
I tried reinstalling IE I even downloaded all of the updates for win xp
sp2(which I said I never will…) Needless to say that nothing fixed the
problem.
I’d also like to point out that last time this happened I reinstalled win
xp(format c:) and that fixed. I’d like a shorter solution if any. Thank you.
