Re: some links won't open in IE, but will in Firefox

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

The complicated links that you talk about are probably using 'scripting' (
you will see something like 'javascript: window.open' in the status bar when
you hover over the link)
You have to have scripting enabled for these to work.

Double click on the Globe icon in the status bar to display the Security
Settings for the Internet Zone. Choose a Medium Level or press the Default
button.

While you are there check the Restricted sites Zone and that you don't have
any of these problem pages placed in that Zone ( You are looking for reasons
why scripting will not run on these pages)

In the Trusted Zones check that you have not 'Only trust https sites' ( or
something like that) checked.

If all seems fine and you still can't get there then the only other thing I
can think of is a dll conflict caused by the uninstall of the Norton files
( I think it shares a number of files with windows)

I am afraid one way of fixing this is to re-install Norton. Maybe you don't
have to activate it or pay any subscription and just use the McAfee. Check
to see if you still have the Norton Shared Files folder under your use
profile. (Its a bit complicated I know... what you are trying to find out is
if there are any shared files that Norton was sharing with IE)

Alternatively heres a link to instructions for repairing IE under XP
