Re: A toughy.

Hi Noel :-)

The 'fragmentation' could simply be the line-length restriction.
Tools|Options|Send for outgoing 'fragmentation'

or having a narrow window to view it in - what happens if the email is opened maximised?

Yes..that could very well be the cause of the fragmentation. However, I don't know what those items are in the OP's OE. Is it only what "he" is seeing when he opens that post, or is it being seen that way by others? That is why I was interested a link or information to see an actual post so we could see how it looks to others.

I would suggest that you uninstall the SP2 before repairing XP:

When I get the time, I will try that. It makes sense.

Good.

Repair XP, follow the directions to reinstall the SP2, then immediately visit the Windows update to reinstall all the necessary updates.

The following paragraph is an example what was happening in OE ***************************************************************
In regards the fragmentation, I have no way to know how your posts looked
as
you did not provide a link to it. But, it could be due to
how you have your OE set up. Can you explain what you mean by fragmented? Perhaps post a small example here so we can
see what it
is
doing? You may be able to make a simple setting adjustment to resolve that part of the problem.
***********************************************************
Looks weird, doesn't it? This stuff started after I had used OE for years so I doubt that a setting would have changed and I sure never made the change. The balance of the problem that I never bothered to spell out because a re-load should fix it too.

Does this happen when you send an e-mail, or does it only happen when you post to the newsgroups?

(I need to put a blank line at the top.)

OK. My problems. The line above is because it often (but not always) cuts off the first 3 words of a post. Can't find out why. Anyone??

I have mine set up with the list of subjects on top and the "From: To: and Subject" window on the bottom half. Always have and assume it is standard with most folks. When I reply to a post, it used to just send and return me to the post I was replying to. Now it erases the top window except for the little squares showing where the subjects WERE. It hangs up there until I click a different folder (newsgroup) and then go back to my original one (like yours) and it will list normally again except it starts at the top again and I have to scroll down to the post I was replying to. What has changed? I have run 6 different virus finders and none of them find anything. I just checked and I have all the MS updates.

This is a hard thing to explain and maybe I failed but feel free to ask me for any clarification you need and I'll try. One friend wants me to try Firefox but I have used MS since there was a MS and want to continue but this is driving me nuts. (I have since gone to thunderbird but hope to go back.)

This does sound as if there is some corruption in the program, and hopefully the repair will correct iRestore to a date prior to the problem? Something may have happened that can be corrected by doing a restore. I would recommend that you try a System Restore first and see if that does not help resolve the problem. Here are the instructions on how to do that in case you need them. This will undo any harmful events that may have taken place since the last restore point.

Thanks Jan. If I am reading this thing right...........

Windows XP SP2: Reinstall Windows XP SP2

It is saying with SP2, I need not change anything in the regs, just reinstall SP2? And that will fix OE?
The fixes for SP1 sound more plausible but I DO have SP2 so that is the only thing that applys? Seems like I tried that recently and it did nothing to stop the fragmenting etc but I have been fighting it for so long that by now I have forgotten what all I HAVE tried.

Hi Glenn :-)

First off, you have XP Pro, therefore, you cannot delete IE/OE, as it is a core part of the XP program, and deleting any of these files will seriously damage your XP program. But, you can disable it, or repair it. I would suggest a repair at this point and see if that helps, as some files may have become corrupted. I have listed information on how to repair XP.

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP

If you have SP2 then read the SP2 section of these instructions:

Hope this helps :-)

A poster in another NG commented they liked Netscape better than Thunderbird and this was my response. Perhaps someone here could answer my reload question.

I thought Thunderbird WAS Netscape.

Thunderbird is by Mozilla: http://texturizer.net/thunderbird/features.html

I don't like it as well as OE but if you noticed how my posts had sentences fragmented, OE was doing that. It also screwed up my screen each time I hit "send".

Now that I am using thunderbird, I may try to delete OE completely and see if I can reload it in a good state..

Little recent history on my OE's. I formated the hd on my old puter and reloaded from scratch a new win98. It is routed together with this one. Anyway the old version of OE that was on the 98 cd worked and through M$ updates, brought it up to the latest version and it works perfectly.

I'm just hesitant about messing with a working xp pro on this puter. If I am successful in deleting OE here, I wonder if re-running the install cd would just do a clean reload of the missing OE or mess up something else at the same time. None of the forums will touch that question because they evidently don't know. ?????????????
