I would trace it. Since you have XP Pro you also have its Support
Tools which has netcap in it. Then you can use Ethereal to format
that trace. Trace both the responses to IE and the firefox requests.
That will remove any question about the source of the message which
is displayed to you in each browser.

Trace the same transaction on the other computers which work
and try to see what the differences are either in the requests
or in the responses. E.g. if one machine is infected by spyware
so that the ultimate request is being redirected from the spyware site
the error message could be the university site's reaction to that.
Etc.
