Recently put this post on asking somewhere else too - no replies yet - but
this is the current state of events
System spec
I've got an XP home with SP2 & use IE as my browser - then I've got a
couple cables plugged in the back - one goes to the ADSL phoneline socket &
another plugs into my Netgear combined wireless broadband modem/router
device, & two wireless USB devices, one on my machine, one on a widows 98 in
another room.
I've started getting this problem with an increasing number of sites it
started off with Puckator & now it's happening on sites that were okay b4.
I've looked around serveral forums & the advice genrerated is much the same
It's either a "hosts file" problem or an "MTU size" problem, my problem is
- where the heck to I find those two gizmos on my computer/router ?
- I'm not that advanced but I presume there is a way to get to the host file
going via my computer, then into C drive, when somewhere in windows folder ?
I guess the MTU thing is in there too or is that on my router ?
Stuff I have checked:
AVG & Housecall virus/trojan scanning + hyjackthis & regcleaner
I've been using the above programs to zap stuff for a couple years, with
caution of course with no problems.
I've emtyed my cookies/tempory internet files (there are 3 dat files in the
cookies folder that aren't deleted - I've no idea what they do so I've left
'em there)
My Netgear router virtually set itself up - the shared internet
connection is on DHCP = PPPoA which I understand is different to PPPoE,
which most advice is aimed at. the modem is connected & so is the wireless
port - reception on the other computer is "patchy" but works most of time so
I don't want to fiddle with the settings too much. I installed the latest
firmware some months back & it is still up to date.
I havn't blocked any site,s on the "block sites list" part of the router.
I've enabled a wep password for the network (128bit) & I've had not had any
conflicts with the windows firewall/pop-up blocker or anything else in SP2
Router firewall settings -
Firewall Rules
Outbound Services
Enable Service Name Action LAN Users WAN Servers Log
Default Yes Any ALLOW always Any Any Never
Inbound Services
Enable Service Name Action LAN Server IP address WAN Users Log
Default Yes Any BLOCK always Any Any Never
"This lists all existing rules for inbound traffic. If you have not defined
any rules, only the default rule will be listed. The default rule blocks all
inbound traffic."
I don't know what "inbound" traffic means excactly so I've left it at
default - I've had no problem viewing sites & graphics at these settings for
last 6 months.
I did a DNS lookup to get an IP address for the companies website so I could
do a ping test - the results came back as follows
PING 217.199.184.81 (217.199.184.81): 56 data bytes
--- 217.199.184.81 ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss
Any ideas where my loss packets went ? is the ping thingy being blocked by
not having an inbound traffic rule of some sort ?
