Okay, just in case others have the problem, here is how I "fixed" it:

I went to Internet Options!Advanced and told it to reset to the "Default"
settings, did the same thing with the security settings.

Then things started working normally again. Then I went and changed the
things that I knew I had done before. Everything works as expected now.

I also had a problem in that I could not view these Newsgroups. IE said
they were offline, etc. But I tried a different computer and no problem. To
fix this, I "Signed Out" of my .net Passport login and then back in. Presto
the newsgroup posts were visible again.

Go figure. This newsgroup thing seemed to foul up when I clicked on a link
in email from the newsgroup that said I had a reply.

I don't know what actually caused any of these problems, and that is
somewhat disturbing, but at least I have things back to normal.
