You might take a look at the following and see if it will help:

Cannot save images in proper format

Click Start/Run and type this command to fix the 'Content Type' settings:

regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll
(and/or)
regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll (for WinXP)

You might also testing the imagesl:

How to test Images in IE

Open IE and for testing purposes,
Go to http://www.jpeg.org/
Right click on one of the pictures and click on 'Save picture as...'
Verify that proper file name is shown and the type is JPEG (*.jpg)
No need to actually save the picture if not wanted -
