IE only bmp, no jpg etc also scripting error

XP Pro Media Center Ver 2000 Service Pack 2...
8 days ago suddenly I was unable to save pics on the web in any format other
than bmp PLUS when I sought help in IE an error comes up stating "an error
has occured in the script on this page" line 2; Char 1; error Invalid
Character; code 0; url

This type of error is popping up in OE, (only a few messages affected) as I
scroll through my messages.
1)Have cleared my cache(files & objects) and ensured the box in
tools>adavanced is unchecked for "save encrypted content to my hard drive".
2)checked and verified the registry for jpeg/jpg content etc - a ok
3)Have created a new profile as per MS article 811151 - no resolution for my
problem. A new profile without my Doc being transferred into this new profile
works just fine but as soon as I bring the luggage in, well you know what
happens.
Many hours on the phone, web and no solution yet - ideas welcome
.
