IE6 Colour Issues

Whenever I develop web pages, I use Opera to test and debug them, as it seems
to have the lowest tolerance of errors in web pages out of all web browsers.
When developing my new website, as an interesting experiment, I decided to
try and open it using Internet Explorer where I encountered the most bizarre
problem. Opera and Internet Explorer seem to display picture colours
differently! Which is the correct one? Well, Opera, of course. Interent
Explorer seems to darken all colours used in images. Even using "Websafe"
colours doesn't help. While on previous pages I did do some quick testing of
them on Internet Explorer, I don't ever recall encountering this problem. It
is very noticeable on my site because I use a gradient along the bottom, and
the topmost part of the gradient finished on the colour of the background. I
don't want to have to make two versions of my website, so how can I get
colours to display correctly in Internet Explorer? I am using Internet
Explorer 6.0.2800.1106 SP1 on Windows 2000 Server (although users of other
configurations have noticed the same thing) and Adobe Photoshop 7 to create
all of my images in PNG format.
