It takes me about 3 sec on IE6 WinXP Home, 512meg mem - dual channel DDR,
nVidia chipset w/ graphics w/ Athlon 2200. I require a complete refresh on
each visit, your result might be better if you can live with cached pages.
If your cache is large your speed may suffer as well - so clean it
regularly.

Theoretical speed from cable is about 6000 kbits - about 700 Kbytes ( 1 byte
= 8 bits ) - with packet information and buffers, etc - you get about 660
Kbytes thru a really clean connection. Any problem with the connection and
this drops FAST. Test your connection to make sure it is optimal. Oh, and I
believe DSL is more in the range of 1500-2200 kbits - about 200 Kbytes. So
if your page is 1 meg it would take 5 sec. Distance form the local switch
can also have a significant impact.

300 baud (my 1st machine) got about 30 bytes per second. So a 1 meg page
would take a little over 9 HOURS! If you wanted to see 1,000 such pages it
would take about a year - so count your blessings.

If you have DSL and you are not getting 200 Kbytes look carefully at your
wiring. A bad connection in DC is easy as any moisture brings corrosion. A
mismatched twisted pair is also a common plague.

Some time at anadtech or tomshardware might be useful to you as well. Map
the information as it flows from the source, go step by step, and you may
find several bottlenecks - memory is only one such.
