IE closes when trying to access another program

Ever since I bought a new HDD, and transferred all the data from my old one
to my new one, I've been having a problem with IE.

When I try to access a different program within IE, the window just closes
without any type of error or what not.

For example, if I am on a website, and there are links posted to a pdf, or
wav, or mp3 etc., if I were to click on the links, the window will just
close.

I notice that this only happens when the file extension of links are
something that are not related to IE, such as pdf being associated to adobe
reader, wav/mp3 to windows media player etc.
