Problems with accessing pages on the Internet with XP SP2

I recently got a new system which came pre-installed with Windows XP
Professional SP2. My prior system was Win98 SE. Since then, I have had a
few strange problems with the internet that I haven't been able to resolve.
I use a cable modem.

Some pages cause the browser to hang and can only be closed by using
ctrl-alt-del, then end task. Two examples of this are the admittedly
dissimilar in content but similar in terms of a lot of graphics sites -
iVillage and ESPN. I tried these sites with Netscape v 7.2 and they work
fine.

My other problem is even more concerning. I access the hospital web site
for work through my browser. There are a couple of features of this -
displaying EKGs and printing reports - which are Java based. These have
never worked on this system, but worked fine on my old system. The
computers at the hospital itself are WinXP Professional SP2, so it seems
like there must be a setting I can change to fix this, but I can't figure
out what it is. I could not get these features to work with Netscape.

While trying to resolve these problems, I did install the latest version of
Java through the Sun site. I also tried other remedies which were mentioned
here, such as disabling the pop-up blocker and clearing any type of cache I
could think of, all with no success.

I am not using a proxy server. The computer came with McAfee security,
which I am not a big fan of, that has a firewall and antivirus program. I
disabled the Windows Firewall so they won't conflict.

I would really appreciate assistance with these problems, or a website which
might help.
