I followed the instructions here but it didn't fix it. The
only possibility is that perhaps I have spyware installed
that prevents activex from running. I used ad-aware but it
didn't find anything.

Nothing here helped either. :(
I did find something interesting: A file was placed in my
IE cache that contains details of the problem. Here is the
one that is created when I go to WindowsUpdate:
