various java problems

I have been having Java problems for some months now.
The following are only the most common occurrences.
The latest:
class java.lang.NullPointerException
was just the top line that appeared when I tried to do
the HP System checkup through Windows Help and Support.

Also, many java-enabled sites do not load for me, with
the message that I must upgrade my browser in spite of
the fact that I am using IE6.0
The same even happens in Hotmail before I reach my Inbox.

I can't install the latest Java app. (j2re-1_4_1_07-
windows-i5861) - it downloads, but then Windows does not
recognize it as a valid Win32 application. The file
itself shows as 0kb. The same happens whether I open or
save the exe.

Also, I can't attach files to Hotmail, and when I
download any attachments, Windows adds a [1] to the
filename without my consent, which usually means the file
can't be found or opened.

I've followed all the tips for options in Internet
Options > Advanced. To no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
