Weird errors: no login to start page/Google Image Search is 404 error

Windows XP Professional
Internet Explorer 6 (although these errors also happened when I tried to
use Mozilla)

Over the last five days, my browser has slowed and I am unable to log
into my Excite start page or view images on sites like NFL.com or
anything at all during a Google Image Search.

The excite start page keeps reading that:

"The browser you're using is not allowing you to sign in to Excite.
Right now, your browser's settings are configured to disable cookies
and/or JavaScript. In order to access your account, you must change your
browser's settings to accept both cookies AND JavaScript."

I have enabled cookies and as far as I know JavaScript is working fine.
My PC clock is correct and I have no firewalls installed (I have a
wireless router who's internal settings have not been altered since
installation).

Images are broken on many web pages I'm viewing and browsing has slowed
on many sites. Google Image Search does not work at all - I keep getting
a 404 page.

I ran a virus check and came out fine. I ran system file checker and it
did some repairs that did not seem to help. I also ran Adaware and
Spybot, but came up empty on both. What could possibly be causing these
problems? I even tried re-installing IE 6, but to no avail.
