Great news... it's all working now... NO POPUPS ALL DAY LONG !!!
HURRAY !!! First time in years !!!

I bought ad-aware SE plus, and it, in combination with XP-SP2, really
do the trick. Also running Norton 2005 (just updated this weekend),
so there's a combination effect I suppose.

Ad-aware found dozens of malware thingies, cleaned them up, it is all
singing, all dancing now.

Ad-aware looks like it even blocks javascript popups, so I think we
are going to use the pop-up blocker that comes with SP2, which seems
more forgiving (or less strict at any rate.)
