Stops loading pages about 5 links deep

Hi.
We have a curious problem on certain computers IE will only open about 5
links on a page before it just stops - I mean the hour glass is spinning
like it is processing but the page will not load.
If I copy the current URL, close and re-open IE, paste the URL and then
click the link that IE had stalled on it then opens fine but will stop again
after 5 or so links.
I have had this problem before and aonly a full reinstall seemed to fix it.
The computer in question has been scanned for viruses and ad-ware/spy-ware
and nothing was found.
This computer is just one many at the college with all the IE setting set
exactly the same as all the rest.
It had been working fine until recently.
